Lie detector tests are any mechanical or electrical devices used to render a diagnostic opinion about the honesty or dishonesty of an individual. In the workplace, they are generally administered when investigating a specific criminal incident. Lie detector tests include polygraphs, deceptographs, psychological stress evaluators, and voice stress analyzers. Generally, private-sector employers may use only polygraphs in limited circumstances.
This course describes the use of lie detector tests (specifically polygraph tests) in the workplace, including the laws and regulations that govern them, the criteria for administering them, and the rights of employees who may be asked to take them. The goal of the course is to enable the learner to administer polygraph tests in a manner compliant with current law.
